After 40 years in the Automotive Industry, Julian is highly regarded as a fantastic source of knowledge for anything Automotive Aftermarket. From candidate names to parts manufacturers and distributors names and locations, there is little that Julian doesn’t know. To this day he still remembers various parts numbers and the different bus schedules he had to catch to get to his first job!
It was 1978, the car of choice was either an Austin Allegra or Morris Marina, and a 16-year-old Julian was keen to get into the world of work. With nothing but a bus schedule and determination to get a job, Julian sent out over fifty letters to potential employers. He had few responses and the interviews he attended left him feeling unimpressed with the recruitment process. Those experiences of poor recruitment practise have remained with Julian and they drive his passion for ensuring he gives his candidates a first class experience.
One of the companies that did reply was Halfords Great Barr where, following a very positive interview, Julian began as a Trainee Sales Assistant / Cycle Mechanic. Little did Julian know that the automotive industry would be his professional stomping ground for the next 40 years. Julian notes that it is from his time at Halfords that he learnt some of his most important lessons that he follows to this day.

- Don’t just achieve your targets but beat them.
Over the next ten years at various branches and autocentres, Julian rose to Assistant Manager and later moved to Autella where he began as a Trainee Manager and within 8 months was promoted to Branch Manager.
Throughout his 11-year career at Autella Julian received Manager of the Year on multiple occasions. He was noted for taking a branch that took £1000 a day and between motivation and recruitment he saw that number rise to £5000 a day.
It was during his time at Autella that Julian met Glen Shepherd (future Glen Callum Associates Co-Founder and Director). Glen was the National Account Manager for Ring Automotive and would regularly call on Julian, the pair had a great rapport and Julian was always impressed with how Glen managed to seal more sales than Julian had anticipated!
When they met again at the ATS Show in 1999, Glen had just set up Glen Callum Associates, they exchanged numbers and agreed to keep in touch. Julian didn’t know then that in 2004 Glen and Kerrie would offer Julian an opportunity to join them as a recruitment consultant. Glen was looking for a Trainee recruiter and recognised that Julian had all the attributes he was seeking. Julian had a huge knowledge of the industry, a great memory for names, huge drive and his customer service skills were second to none. Like Kayleigh, Tom and the other successful trainees to follow, Julian received professional recruitment training and his next career path within the automotive industry was as a fully-fledged recruitment consultant.
Today, Julian recruits for a variety of clients covering everything from OEM’s, parts manufacturers, consumable manufacturers and aftermarket distributors. He recruits at all levels from trainee through to directorships in various fields such as sales, marketing, management, operations, logistics and warehousing.
