UK car manufacturing hits six-year high!

The Society of Motor Trade Manufacturers and Traders SMMT has just launched results figures for the car manufacturing industry for 2013 and highlights positive predictions for the industry moving forward.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “2013 demonstrated the value of the UK’s diverse car manufacturing industry, as surging home demand and robust exports outside Europe saw output grow 3.1% to over 1.5 million units. UK automotive investment announcements exceeded £2.5 billion in 2013, reinforcing industry analysts’ suggestions that the UK could break all-time car output records within the next four years.”

·         Car production rose 3.1% in 2013 to surpass 1.5 million units – highest volume since 2007.

·         Industry analysts predict output to reach record levels of around two million units by 2017.

·         UK could become the third largest car manufacturer in Europe.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said, “Today’s figures are another sign that the British car industry is going from strength to strength – with one vehicle rolling off a production line somewhere in the UK every 20 seconds.

“Our success lies in the appetite from countries around the world for British cars. Around 80% of the 1.5 million cars we produced last year were exported – a testament to the diverse, high quality of British manufacturing.

Top five non-EU export destinations, 2009-2013 (*2013 is Q1-3 only)

China’s share of exports has grown rapidly over recent years, and the country now looks set to become the largest non-EU market for UK-built cars.

Take-up in the United States remained strong last year, and while Russia has seen volumes fall since 2012, it is now firmly established as a key export destination.

With increases in UK Vehicle manufacturing many of the local supply chain component providers are also seeing an increase in business levels. With location playing a part UK businesses are able to offer shorter production runs and shorter lead times whilst still maintaining pristine and OE quality in terms of product specifications.

At Glen Callum Associates we work with international, national and leading local companies ensuring they have the most suited and qualified staff needed to maintain this upsurge in manufacturing levels.  We are also able to supply export account staff with multi-lingual abilities ensuring communication and understanding of the key export markets.

Call us on 01384 485274 or email to arrange for us to contact you to talk further about how we can tailor a cost effective recruitment solution to ensure your business gains and retains talented professionals.

Automotive Aftermarket Diagnostics is set to become one of the UK’s fastest growing segments!

Average vehicle age rise leads to increase market value

The diagnostic scan tools market is expected to grow in the UK as vehicles with more complex electronics get older.

Globally, the market is due to reach $3.1 billion by 2018, with the UK expected to be the fastest growing segment in the next 2-3 years. With a higher average age of vehicle on the road, the independent aftermarket is highlighted to benefit, according to a report by Markets and Markets.

The report highlighted in aftermarket online (see below) confirms the importance of diagnostic testing and how this will continue to grow in the coming years. Investment in the technology is expected to be increasingly relevant as the UK’s vehicle fleet increases its average age.

2014 Insight into the UK Recruitment market!

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has updated their members on the major opportunities and challenges for the recruitment industry for 2014. As members of the REC we thought it useful to share and update OUR clients and candidates with information from this bulletin to allow an insight into the industry, enabling OUR customers to be a step ahead in their own recruitment and job search strategies!

The REC anticipates 2014 being a year full of opportunity for the UK recruitment industry.
The economy is growing with most economists predicting GDP being well above 2%. Therefore they forecast that the UK recruitment market will see accelerating growth with the first quarter growing at about 7% followed by the market picking up to above 8% across the latter part of 2014.

However the challenge this year will continue to be candidate availability, the second challenge in many managerial and professional markets is the growing shortage of skill and talent. At the beginning of 2013 the REC/KPMG Report on Jobs showed 14 areas of skill shortage and as we start 2014, the number has risen to 47 and is accelerating month on month. This means we are re-entering a candidate driven market. Successful recruiters in these markets will need to develop content that attracts this scarce talent while then building meaningful relationships that keeps the talent close.

At Glen Callum Associates we will beat the above challenges by ensuring we continue to develop relationships with the candidates we have on our substantial 16 year database, along with engaging new candidates, attracting fresh talent with our continued networking activity and industry insights and therefore building further relationships.   We have also invested a great deal of time and resource in the areas of advertising and embracing new technologies and Glen Callum is now proud to boast an excellent web presence, social networking presence, our leading “autojobs” job app as well as still utilising the traditional methods of advertising in trade press and on job boards.

 GCA Key Priorities for 2014

  • Ensure we continue to lead in advertising, attracting new talent and embracing social networking technologies.
  • Continue to engage candidates and build on new and existing relationships
  • Continue to build and source new Client relationships – ensuring more job offerings
  • Ensure we are at the forefront of industry knowledge

If candidate availability and shortage is to be a challenge in 2014 then we are confident this is a challenge we are able to rise to and attracting talent is number 1 on the GCA agenda!

As relationship building with both candidates and clients is key in ensuring we both offer our candidates a large range of opportunities and our clients a large range of suitable candidates then you can be assured that we will be ensuring we also have relationship building and client and candidate engagement high on our priorities for 2014.  Therefore a call or communication from a member of the GCA team is likely to be heading your way.

Should you wish to engage with us prior to this to ensure you remain a step ahead then please do not hesitate to get in touch.

What is an Automotive Aftermarket Job?

We frequently get asked ‘Would a career in the UK automotive aftermarket allow for long term, abundant and exciting job opportunities?’ and ‘What actually is the automotive or motor vehicle aftermarket?’

We have put together an ‘easy to understand explanation on the automotive aftermarket’ and a quick brief on how the sector is performing…………………

The ‘automotive aftermarket or ‘motor vehicle aftermarket’ encompasses all products and services purchased for light, medium and heavy duty vehicles after the original sale including replacement parts, accessories, lubricants, appearance products, tyres, collision repairs as well as the tools and equipment necessary to make the repair.

In basics the ‘automotive aftermarketis everything that happens to a vehicle after it leaves the new vehicle dealership.

The automotive industry in the UK already accounts for over 719,000 people employed across manufacturing, retail and aftermarket sectors. (Data from the SMMT 2013)

The ‘automotive aftermarket’ or ‘motor vehicle aftermarket’ is a significant sector of the UK economy and typically generates £4.8bn of added value annually(Data from the SMMT 2013)

The aftermarket advertises a diverse range of job opportunities and current demand for positions is high for the following:  Product Management and Marketing jobs, IT and Analytical roles, Field Sales, Business Development, Export jobs and Programme Management.   These positions are not exhaustive and trends in roles are everchanging.

Albeit most of the jobs listed are positions which are needed in most sectors we find that employers have a preference for industry professionals to allow them to “hit the ground running” with regards to industry knowledge and expertise.

Also a consideration for the aftermarket job hunter is the crossover between the automotive and allied sectors.  The aerospace and engineering industries also have a significant impact within the UK and we frequently have requests from employers for candidates who have backgrounds from either automotive or allied industries.  Therefore allowing for candidates with skills from similar sectors to enjoy a wider range of job opportunities.
